Job description:

Job Description

About us

The Ministry of Social Development is a people-centred organisation. We're in communities across the motu, working with partners to help New Zealanders be safe, strong and independent.
We provide social policy and advice to government and assistance, including salary, employment and housing support to people of all ages, families, wh?nau and communities.
As a Te Tiriti o Waitangi partner we are committed to supporting and enabling M?ori, wh?nau, hap?, Iwi and communities to realise their own potential and aspirations.
Our people are as diverse as the communities we serve. We care about the wellbeing and success of our people and provide a supportive and inclusive working environment where people can thrive and be who they are.

The Opportunity

Talented at visual communication of data and analytics? Care about making a difference for people in New Zealand? This is the job for you!
We are seeking for someone who can help us innovate and excel in how we visually communicate insights out of our research and analytics. We produce fascinating analytical work on topics that matter most to the wellbeing of New Zealanders. But we rely too much on narrative reports. We need your help transforming our insights into user-centred visual products that compel uptake and action from our stakeholders.
You will be part of the Research and Evaluation team, within the Strategy and Insights group. The function of the Strategy and Insights group is to lead the development and implementation of the Ministry's strategy by creating insights for effective decision making, focusing resources on the right investments, and knowledge and evaluating performance.
About the team
The Research and Evaluation team are champions and custodians of evidence within the Ministry. We are responsible for looking ahead, developing, and delivering a programme of research and evaluative work that produces insights and positions knowledge products to shape the Ministry's strategic decisions. We are experts in results-located design, research, and evaluation, deploying a range of methodologies to answer questions at the core of effective social development intervention. We support quality, ethics, publications, transparency, and empowerment through the research process.
About the function
The primary function of the Information Designer is to be a data narrative and visualisation leader within the Strategy and Insights Group. You're here for your design and translation skills – you'll understand data concepts, but you don't need to be on the data tools.
You'll work with analysts across the group to ensure insights, analytics, and complex concepts are translated to a range of audiences in a compelling and visually engaging way. The value that analytics teams generate is only realised if people can understand the output produced. Work may be presented in the form of executive overviews, visual data explainers, technical reports or interactive visualisations. This will mean being able to communicate clearly to senior managers, Ministers, the general public and to workers on the front line, through good design and narrative.
You will also develop other members of the group to build their information design capcapability, providing advice as well as producing reusable templates or products. You will balance proactive upskilling of the wider group with responsive support for quick turnaround requests.
You will have:
» capability to think critically, with an inquisitive, questioning mind - you see the power in data and the story Information technology can tell
» Be passionate about user-centred knowledge products and design
» Talented at distilling insights and producing compelling visual displays to help evidence inform decision making
» significant tertiary qualification (particularly, Graphic Design, Information Design or Data Journalism), or equivalent practice
» Strong portfolio of previous work that demonstrates technical graphic design and data visualisation skills
» You're comfortable talking data with technical experts
» Proactive go-getter, able to work with ambiguity and deliver results across multiple projects in a fast-changing environment.
» Demonstrated capability to write to a high standard (clear, accurate, concise, appropriate to the audience).
