The Joint Evidence, Data and Insights Group underpins our purpose with the strategy, structures and evidence base required for an enduring environmental monitoring, research and reporting system.
Aotearoa New Zealand is in a position of unprecedented environmental reform and these functions present an opportunity for you to influence how we communicate and engage with Treaty Partners and stakeholders on key policy programmes and reporting products. Our group delivers the knowledge, evidence and science to support environmental reporting, our policy programme to amend the Environmental Reporting Act 2015, development of an Environment and Climate Research Strategy, development of limits and targets to support the resource management system reform and development of MfE’s Long Term Insights Briefing.
We have two exciting opportunities for practiced Senior Scientist(s) to support this significant portfolio of work. These are pivotal functions that will lead and support a variety of complex and challenging projects aligned with the Ministry’s overall science strategy led by our Departmental Chief Science Advisor/Kaitohutohu M?tanga P?taiao Matua. This will include driving science impact and strengthening our knowledge of the environment. Drawing information from across knowledge systems and sciences they will translate this information to enhance the quality of MfE’s work.
The prosperous candidates will have the opportunity to work with Treaty Partners and across local and central government, the research science and innovation community and with on-the-ground organisations (such as communities, ENGOs).

We are pursuing candidates who have tangible practice leading work in complex policy environments/projects and/or environmental reporting. practice providing advice to external Boards, Ministers, or Councillors would be an advantage as well. An individual who thrives on influencing up and reporting on accountcapability across a system to enable group success, will relish this function.
Our ideal candidates will also offer:
   » practice providing scientific advice, including peer review, to management, colleagues, government agencies, sectors, M?ori interest groups and the wider public, within the context of the assigned work area.
   » capability to enable evidence-located policy, programmes and operations work via research, surveys, investigations, data analysis and drafting related reports, utilising a range of internal and external resources,
   » capability to translate complex scientific information for a general audience to support non-specialist colleagues, policymakers, and the wider public to understand the evidence behind decisions and/or to support decision-makers in knowledge the implications of options under consideration.
   » practice contributing scientific skills to the drafting of procurements, policy documents, legislation, regulations, guidelines and ad hoc policy advice, as well as the translation of policy into operational initiatives, programmes, and processes, in co-operation with internal and external working parties.
   » capability to engage with a range of stakeholders and partners, providing a high standard of service and building enduring relationships.
   » An agile and adaptive approach, with a can-do attitude and desire to make a difference.
   » Maturity, sound judgement, and a solution focused approach to problem solving.
   » An capability to lead complex projects and coach and mentor junior staff.
   » The limits and targets programme is seeking a scientist who can work within the air domain.

Wh?nuitanga Utu ?-Tau | income Range
income range for this function is $101,802 to $124,424 pa. Appointment within this range will be located on skills and practice.
