An exciting opportunity to join the team that is home to Te Papa's core museological practices!
Te Papa is seeking a permanent full-time Exhibition Technician position at 40 hours per week, and a permanent part-time Exhibition Technician position at 20 hours per week. Reporting to the Manager Exhibitions Services, the position sits within the Collections and Research Directorate.
An Exhibition Technician is responsible for all practical areas of exhibition installation, deinstallation, and maintenance. This includes construction of exhibition displays and furniture as well as object support, rigging, object handling, transportation, crating and seismic mitigation. They also support the wider Exhibitions Services team by assisting with storage, transit and display supports for collection items when required.
In addition to this the Exhibition Technician will:
   » interpret construction drawings and exhibition plans to be able to construct exhibition displays and connected furniture, fixtures, interactives and props
   » design and fabricate mounts and displays for objects
   » install and deinstall exhibitions within timeframes while meeting quality standards
   » develop cost estimates for materials and time to ensure accurate project planning
   » facilitate a high standard of Collection Care through activities such as storage housing, transportation and object support.
We are pursuing applications from candidates who have:
   » proven practice in exhibition installation, deinstallation, and maintenance activities, including the handling of collection items or similar
   » thorough knowledge of Collection Management and Conservation requirements during exhibition installation
   » high level of competency in carpentry and/or metal work, including connected equipment such as table saws, lathe, mill, TIG/MIG welding, jig and drop saws etc.
   » practice with materials such as acrylic, resins, fabrics and paint
   » a sound knowledge and application of safe workshop practices
   » consciousness of cultural considerations. Knowledge of M?ori protocols when handling, supporting and displaying Taonga
   » a can-do attitude and passion for working in museums as part of a team
   » excellent time management, able to work under instruction, and in time-pressured environments
   » physically fit and capable to fulfil the function - including working at heights, climbing ladders, lifting and carrying loads
   » a full driver's licence.
The income range for this position is $60,000 to $70,000 with further room for progression through the band. Offers will be made within the range to reflect the expertise and practice offered by the candidate and those required by the function, and internal relativities with other employees
candidates must have the capability to obtain and maintain the legal right to work in New Zealand.
From 1 July 2022 appointment to a position at Te Papa will require a declaration of Vaccination Status (confirmation that you are currently 'up to date' with vaccination against COVID 19 or, you are not currently vaccinated or 'up to date' with vaccination against COVID-19). Future appointees will also need to agree to comply with any future Government or Te Papa mandates or requirements relating to vaccination against COVID-19.
