AUT has a deep and genuine collective commitment to Pacific peoples. AUT’sOffice of Pacific Advancement (OPA)is grounded in this commitment, and prioritises the wellbeing and success of Pacific communities at AUT and beyond. Our programmes and initiatives span the student and staff practice; academic research development, impact and engagement; advocacy, and community-located collaborations and partnerships. AUT has the largest cohort of Pacific university students in New Zealand, and they are supported from entry through to research degrees. We maintain and facilitate initiatives of importance to Pacific communities in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands through education, research, professional training, academic opportunities and partnerships.
Some key examples of OPA’s work include ourUniPrep programme; which partners with high schools, predominantly in South Auckland, to empower and support student transitions to university (more than 75% of Uniprep participants are Pacific peoples). OPA also empowers Pacific students to take an active function in their success through extracurricular programmes such as the Oceanian leadership abilities Network (OLN), comprising of students from different faculties, schools and campuses across AUT.
 

Become our new adjunct Pro Vice-Chancellor Pacific
This is a critical leadership abilities position where you’ll implement a strengths-located approach that empowers Pacific students, staff, and Pacific Indigenous research initiatives; and elevates the profile of Pacific at AUT. You’ll co-design and develop strategies, all supported by your skills and expertise in leadership abilities, research and positive transformation. You’ll advise and engage academic, professional and external stakeholders as you collaborate, partner and network across our faculties and directorates. Through this work you will establish and supervise systems, processes and initiatives under the auspices of the Office of Pacific Advancement to advance Pacific equity objectives under the AUT Strategic Plan and report on, share and encourage good practice in relation to Pacific success. You will also have strategic oversight of the Office of Pacific Advancement portfolio and lead team members to ensure that projects and initiatives within this portfolio are prosperously realised. This includes reviewing and improving existing projects of significant size and scale, such as Uniprep and the OLN (as noted above).
We’re a small, lean team working across high numbers of stakeholders – this function is a mix of strategic, and operational tasks and has so much variety!
As a key member of OPA’s leadership abilities group you will work closely with, and report to, our awesome Pro-Vice Chancellor PacificAssociate Professor Jacoba Matapo. You’ll have many direct engagements with students through our many different initiatives and enjoy supporting youth and their aspirations. You will lead 8 highly committed and passionate staff who report into the function. At peak times of the year, up to around 50 casual and fixed-term staff will also indirectly report to you.
You’ll join a team grounded by an approach to work that is cultural, relational and people-centred, and which embraces manaakitanga, whanaungatanga, kaitiakitanga. As a leader within AUT and OPA, your continuing leadership abilities development and professional aspirations will be supported.
You’ll need to possess a genuine service-leadership abilities mindset, supported by effective organisational skills and a strong capability to develop and lead effective teams. Equally as critical is an authentic, collegial and positive leadership abilities style which values diversity, working inclusively and embodies trustworthiness, confidence and kindness. You’ll be a highly collaborative and influencing future-focused leader who listens and is passionate about the advancement of Pacific peoples; whilst enabling ideas, innovation and encouraging proactivity to make things happen.

Along with your CV, please ensure to submit a cover letter which explains a) why this particular function (and AUT) is of interest, and also b) how your practice aligns with the key practice and attributes we’re seeking below:
   » Existing broad relationships within Pacific communities, and expertise of Pacific values and ways of knowing and being. The capability to operate and lead effectively and respectfully in Pacific cultural contexts is critical.
   » At least eight years’ practice in community development or in an education setting developing and/or leading Pacific wellbeing and success initiatives, preferably at a senior management level (previous practice working in a tertiary academic setting would be advantageous).
   » Demonstrable track record in the development and implementation of Pacific related strategy, plans, programmes and/or
   » practice leading or co-leading Pacific research. Currency in research and scholarship of Pacific student success models, Pacific research methodologies, and culturally sustaining pedagogies and practices would be advantageous.
   » broad practice establishing and maintaining effective, mutually beneficial relationships both internally at multiple levels and with external bodies and the wider community.
   » practice prosperously managing staff and leading teams through an authentic, inclusive, consultative approach which coaches and develops others. Previous staff management practice is preferred.
   » candidates must also have a significant tertiary degree, preferably at postgraduate level.
