M?TAI TIKAKA TAKATA-SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY
As part of its commitment to encouraging Pacific teaching and research excellence and service to communities as informed by the Tertiary Education Strategy and the University of Otago’s Pacific Strategic Framework, Te Puna P?pori, the School of Social Sciences, invites applications for a confirmation-path position as Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Social Anthropology – M?tai Tikaka Takata.
The position will support teaching into POPH192 Population Health, a large first-year Epidemiology paper located in the Health Sciences, to which the Division of Humanities contributes two modules. The Social Anthropology Programme coordinates the Humanities modules and is seeking a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer who can teach in Pacific health, well-being and worldviews.
In addition to contributing to POPH192, the position offers an academic career in M?tai Tikaka Takata, which has an established teaching and research record in socio-cultural anthropology and is interested to renew and extend its focus in the Pacific and Aotearoa New Zealand. The capability to teach and research from Pacific worldviews is essential and can be complemented by other specialities including Indigenous anthropology; Pacific Studies; Indigenous approaches to methods and theory; environmental anthropology; the anthropology of food; digital anthropology; social media; visual anthropology; psychological anthropology; performance studies; legal and political anthropology; multi-species anthropology; and cultural studies. Applications are welcome from candidates with a background in socio-cultural Anthropology or cognate disciplines.

From 2019 Te Puna P?pori has brought together staff and students across eight programmes in Te Kete Aronui, the Division of Humanities (Archaeology; Media, Film and Communication; Politics; Religion; Social Anthropology; Social and Community Work; Sociology, Gender Studies and Criminology; and the National Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies). Information technology is the largest unit in the Division, with 1400 equivalent full-time students (EFTS) and over 80 academic and professional staff. The selected candidate will be part of a cohort of new and established staff in the School, and enjoy collegial support. The School is committed to honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi partnership, and Information technology is our intention that this appointment, together with other recent appointments in the School, will help to increase the number Pacific and M?ori staff at the University of Otago and support their professional and cultural development.
