Job description:

Job Description

Executive Director, Communications
The Health and Discapability System Review was finalised in 2020 and findings indicated that the complicated healthcare system in New Zealand was contributing to inequity and a lack of consistency in care. In order to simplify and coordinate the health system across the country, a new organisation has been created – Te Whatu Ora | Health New Zealand (HealthNZ).
Te Whatu Ora | HealthNZ has been created to achieve a vision of pae ora, healthy futures for all New Zealanders. The new system has been established around the priority results of partnership, equity, sustaincapability, person- and wh?nau-centred care, and excellence. The formation of Te Whatu Ora | HealthNZ is a truly bold and courageous step in the journey to transform the way that health services are delivered in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Te Whatu Ora | HealthNZ will manage the health system day to day and will plan and commission health services for the whole population – with responsibility for improving service delivery and results at all levels. The new organisation will unify the existing public health service, ensuring decisions on the ground are made in alignment with the strategic and national policy direction of the Ministry of Health. In partnership with the Te Aka Whai Ora |M?ori Health Authority, Te Whatu Ora| HealthNZ will ensure that the system has a strong focus on Te Tiriti and health equity for M?ori.
The newly created executive function of Executive Director, Communications will lead the communications strategy for Te Whatu Ora | HealthNZ – engaging with kaimahi, patients and the wider community across Aotearoa as the sector undergoes broad transformation. This person will ensure that the organisation is proactive in sharing its progress on the journey and any further changes that may impact stakeholders. The Executive Director, Communications will bring together existing communications functions from across the sector – developing a high quality, integrated and nationally responsive team. With an emphasis on Te Tiriti o Waitangi, this person will work alongside the executive to bring to life the Waka Hourua Kawenata – with the two worldviews moving together in a common direction. The practice to effectively manage internal and external stakeholders through advocacy, negotiation, and collaboration.
This is an exciting opportunity to tell the story of both Te Whatu Ora | HealthNZ and Te Aka Whai Ora |M?ori Health Authority – promoting community feedback and engagement that will inform the overarching communications strategy, narrative, and action plan. The Executive Director, Communications will provide strategic and operational advice to the Board, CEO, and executive colleagues on media relations, stakeholder engagement and effective change communication.
The organisation is highly complex, and the transformation is broad, so candidates will need to be practiced in leading communications at scale both internally and externally – including media engagement and crisis communications. At a personal level, candidates will be practiced in implementing Te Tiriti and will be instinctively committed to striving for health equity and to the service of a highly diverse community. You will combine both passion and best practice with outstanding technical expertise to deliver exceptional, measurable results.
Working under the remit of a culture of ?no surprises,' you will anticipate and mitigate risk by covering any issues proactively, providing accurate advice on mitigations and responses, supported by a skill set which enables comprehension and dissemination of information from a range of sources whilst maintaining confidentiality and exercising diplomacy.
Te Whatu Ora | HealthNZ is working alongside search firms Kerridge & Partners and Mana Recruitment to manage the appointments of its executive team.
