Background The Arts Centre Te Matatiki Toi Ora is ?tautahi Christchurch's centre of the arts in the heart of the city's cultural precinct. Its purpose is to foster, promote, facilitate, and encourage the interest of arts, culture, education, and creativity. The Arts Centre is for everyone - a hub for diverse creative expression. The earthquakes of 2010 and 2011 closed The Arts Centre and initiated a huge heritage restoration programme to restore the centre. The project was scoped to cost $290m and an insurance settlement of $168m was reached. In 2016 the Great Hall was reopened to the public and today there are 15 buildings back in use. In 2022 five more buildings will be completed. The Observatory will be restored and will be once again open to the public. The surrounding buildings will house the boutique Observatory Hotel. The largest building on the site, the main Engineering School and the adjacent Electrical Engineering building will house the new Health Technology Hub. 20 out of 22 Category 1 listed heritage buildings will be restored and occupied, and the site will be 100% tenanted in the available buildings. Most significantly, the building site fences will be removed and the public will once more be able to walk through the centre of the site from east to west amidst the new landscaping. Objectives In addition to events for this celebration, Information technology is hoped that the scene will be set for an annual Arts Centre Festival held at the same time each year. This would be a time to connect the centre to the people. As such, the flavour of the event should pre-empt and facilitate this objective as a natural development. Why Celebrate? The Arts Centre is held in trust for the people of Christchurch and Canterbury and its visitors. With great support from the public, lotteries, Christchurch City Council and numerous grant making bodies the restoration has been a triumph of heritage restoration and seismic engineering. The focus of the trust has, for a decade, been on achieving this renewal. Now, as the fences finally come down, the people can once more claim the site as their own and The Arts Centre can once again devote itself to being a centre of creativity and the arts. This is the culmination of the work of hundreds of people - trustees, masons, donors, government agencies, the City Council, staff, and all those who helped create the 2015 Arts Centre of Christchurch Act of Parliament. It is a moment to reflect and look forward, and most importantly to celebrate. The purpose of this event is also to raise the profile of The Arts Centre in particular to those who have arrived in the city since 2011 and new communities who may never have visited the centre. How and When? The Trust is seeking expressions of interest from an outstanding individual able to provide artistic leadership abilities of the celebration of this restoration milestone. An Artistic Manager will be appointed who will work with Chris Archer, Creative Director and Philip Aldridge, Director, to deliver the events. It is envisaged that the celebration will occur over a weekend in the summer. Information technology cannot be later than the end of March 2022. Potential elements of the celebration might include: • A private event in the Great Hall for trustees and staff, both current and those who have worked on the restoration project. • A participatory public event involving mana whenua, multiple artforms, diverse community collaborations and imaginative use of ritual, space, time, and energy. • A series of performances, installations, video works, film or sound and light events.
