Committed to continuing to partner with iwi and hap? in order to find new sustainable solutions to address long standing systemic and cross-cutting issues facing M?ori and wider Aotearoa New Zealand. There is a real commitment to identifying opportunities for M?ori to lead and for the creation of an enabling environment for iwi to leverage these opportunities.
A new position has been created in order to develop and manage research strategies recognise M?ori Raraunga – data sovereignty, and kaupapa M?ori.
Te ?hua o Te T?runga – The nature of the position.
The Pou Raraunga Matihiko is a highly strategic, senior leadership abilities position, that focusses organisational design on how tikanga M?ori and M?tauranga M?ori will inform the construction of digital identities and relational responsibilities to data and research.
M?ori data is a Taonga, and as such, M?ori Data sovereigntymust be managed through a tikanga led framework that advocates for M?ori rights and interests ensuring data for and about M?ori is safeguarded and protected, and that this data is utilised to advance M?ori aspirations for collective and individual wellbeing.
Overarching to this is the knowledge that M?ori Data Sovereignty supports tribal sovereignty and the revitalisation of M?ori and iwi aspirations. Ensuring MBIE's data and research strategies recognise M?ori Raraunga, and kaupapa M?ori, the position provides expert knowledge and advice across MBIE and to the Digital,Data and Insights group. This position will have a key function engaging with the GovernmentChief Data Steward at Stats NZ and peer functions across the system to advance this work. You will lead with an authentic engagement style and be able to readily promote the value of tikanga M?ori in a humble and uplifting manner. Supporting organisational governance capcapability lift through knowledge sharing, you will be instrumental in building connections, and positively influencing the way in which M?ori data sovereigntyis presented across the organisation.
Furthermore, the position will guarantee that M?ori rights and interests in relation to MBIE data and research are understood, recognised, and acted upon. This will include the development of appropriate governance frameworks and the creation of M?ori dataecosystems, which recognise the collective identity of M?ori needs to be considered in the rationale for collection, analysis, storage, and dissemination of data.
This position will have a central remit to develop and grow the relationships with iwi and hap?, enabling a trusted conduit in which to share information and educate around potential use of data, informing and driving M?ori and iwi development at a national and local level.

It is expected that candidates will have an broad background within a complex government environment, and can expertly navigate the machinery of government, and able to traverse a bi-cultural framework. Essential requirements for application are to include;
   » Significant practice across dataand research disciplines.
   » Knowledge of M?tauranga M?ori, principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Te Reo me ?na tikanga.
   » broad practice working within, and with M?ori communities, iwi, hap? and M?ori organisations.
   » Excellent communication, negotiation, and advocacy skills.
   » A sound knowledge of best practice data principles and emerging trends.
   » Advanced report writing and data modelling abilities.
   » A robust and well-rounded business acumen, the capability to remain apolitical and practice navigating within complex organisational frameworks.
   » The proven capability to work collaboratively to develop and maintain effective relationships
   » Have practice providing sound leadership abilities and direction.
   » Be known as a leader who brings parties together, connecting, building, and unifying.
   » The practice to effectively manage internal and external stakeholders through advocacy, negotiation, and collaboration.
   » Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills, with the capability to influence at senior management level, as well as cross organisationally.
   » Proven capability to prosperously build the trust and engagement of senior leaders through personal advocacy, vision, drive and working collaboratively with colleagues.
