About our group and team
Learning Support is a critical part of the Sector Enablement and Support Group in the Ministry. We are charged with leading the education sector in ensuring that children and young people with additional learning needs are supported to achieve their full potential through education.
Our Learning Support specialists work closely with families, wh?nau, caregivers, schools and early childhood educators in English and M?ori medium settings and other agencies to help maximise learning results and promote social inclusion.

About this function
As a Psychologist you will play a critical function in our region’s Learning Support team by working with a multidisciplinary team of professionals committed to achieving positive results for children and young people with special education needs.
You will be responsible for providing high-quality services to children with high and complex needs in, educational settings with a focus on severe and challenging behaviour and behaviour crisis response.
You will need:
   » an capability and availability to work in collaborative partnership with other professionals, agencies, families, and the sector
   » excellent interpersonal and communication expertise including an capability to sustain productive professional relationships
   » practice in coordinating and responding to crisis situations
   » a genuine commitment to evidence-located interventions which demonstrate inclusive education practice and contribute to raising student achievement
   » psychologists will require New Zealand Psychologist Board registration and a current Practicing Certificate
   » other candidates will hold significant post-graduate qualifications
   » sensitivity to cultural and ethnic diversity and a commitment to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.
About you
To be prosperous you will need the following:
   » A Masters level tertiary qualification and a post-graduate Diploma in Educational Psychology or equivalent
   » To be registered under the Health Practitioners Competency Assurance Act and to hold a current practicing certificate
   » capability to translate specialist knowledge into practical information
   » capability to co-ordinate service provision in a multi-agency, trans-disciplinary setting
   » Excellent communication and interpersonal expertise and an capability to work effectively with children, young people and their families and teachers across a diverse range of settings
   » The capability to understand and apply the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and tangatawhenuatanga
