The Ministry for the Environment (MfE) was recently funded to lead an ?All of Government’ Climate Data Initiative which aims to transform the way climate data, evidence, and insights are used across the motu. The initiative will deliver a wide variety of integrated data evidence and tools which will transform how climate data is used in every-day personal decision making for iwi/M?ori, property owners & local businesses, and to develop government policy.
The Climate Data Initiative team needs a curious and creative user practice designer to lead the designs of digital climate data products and make complex data insights accessible for all New Zealanders. We need a strong user advocate who leads our user design work programme and makes climate data easy to understand through product designs, research, and testing.

The mission of the UX/UI Design Lead is to create the most accessible and comprehensive design for each climate data & digital product for every New Zealander. You will work across the team to ensure all digital products have a consistent and seamless ?look and feel’ and make climate data easy to understand.
Working in a multi-disciplinary team of data, digital and policy professionals, you will be accountable for user practice design of all our digital climate data products, ensuring they meet the user needs identified through stakeholder engagement and communications. You will be highly adept at identifying and advocating user design needs while balancing a strategic overview with working in the detail.
You will need to bring a user-centric approach and Te Ao M?ori lens as you work in partnerships with hap?/iwi/M?ori, businesses, central & local government, and the Ministry’s climate data teams. These partnerships will establish priorities and pathways to transform how New Zealand uses climate data to drive local climate action and achieve the government’s climate goals.

   » broad practice as a UX/UI designer for a suite of consumer facing Software as a Service (SaaS) products, related online software products or digital products.
   » Significant practice in advocating for the user with research and data analysis, ideally through A/B or UAT testing.
   » Demonstrable practice in using data to make design decisions, including analytics, user research, survey feedback or user testing.
   » A portfolio of visually pleasing (as well as functional) user journeys/ digital interfaces which translates concepts into user flows, wireframes, prototypes, UI and UX designs that lead to intuitive user practices.
   » Cultural capcapability in te ao M?ori, with practice of engaging with and working alongside iwi/M?ori in developing digital products.
   » Credible stakeholder engagement and influencing expertise and an capability to connect at the highest levels – you advise with impact.
   » capability to work collaboratively across a range of different partners, clients, customers, and personalities.
   » A system thinker - capability to take an all of system view to ensure the products you design fit into a wider ecosystem (across government and the private sector).
   » A commitment to developing your cultural capcapability and capacity in te ao M?ori.
Wh?nuitanga Utu ?-Tau | income range
income range for this function is$118,318 to $143,695pa effective from 1 December 2023. Appointment within this range will be located on expertise and practice.

The location for this function is flexible which means you can work anywhere in New Zealand and there is an option to work in the house.
