The Local Government Commission is an independent body established by legislation and its main functions are to promote good local government, make decisions on the structure of local authorities and their electoral representation.
As a Senior Advisor you will manage the end to end process of, and provide advice to the Commissioners on local government reorganisations, representation arrangements and other areas of interest to the Commission. On any given day you might be:
   » Providing high-quality evaluative thinking and evidence-informed analysis and advice to the Commission
   » Engaging with local communities and a wide variety of stakeholders to build and maintain relationships or investigate issues
   » Working with colleagues to deliver on the shared work programme
   » Scoping and evaluating a governance issue, a reorganisation initiative or a representation proposal including the development of timelines, consultation processes, risk analysis and resourcing requirements
The dynamic of working for an independent body which also forms part of a larger whole is fascinating. To succeed in this function you must have:
   » Knowledge of local government legislation, governance, management, processes, decision making systems and representation arrangements for a local authority
   » capability to relate to and gain the confidence of diverse stakeholders, including local authorities, iwi/hapu, community groups, elected members and chief executives
   » practice in providing high quality analysis and advice, effectively applying the results of research, evaluation and monitoring
   » knowledge of te ao M?ori and the capability to provide cultural guidance to Commissioners
The people who make up the Commission are located across the country and much of our work is conducted virtually so you may be located anywhere in New Zealand. However, travel for some in-person engagements is required.
