About our team/Mo te tima
The Division of Health Sciences Maori Health Workforce Development Unit (MHWDU) are seeking a dynamic and highly motivated individual to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity to step into a high energy, frontline function delivering Te Whakapuawai, a comprehensive (and very prosperous) programme to support Maori students into and through the academically challenging Health Sciences First Year (HSFY) course.
The overarching goal of Te Whakapuawai is to increase the number of Maori HSFY progressing into Otagos health professional programmes and health science degree study, ensuring that students feel well-supported and well-informed to achieve their goals.
The function/Te mahi
This is an academic position wherein the ideal candidate will be provided full support and training to develop a high level of skills in programme delivery, evaluation and student advising in a kaupapa Maori office environment.
this function requires a proven capability to establish rapport and the skills to foster whakawhanaungatanga/a sense of belonging, amongst Maori HSFY students. An excellent knowledge of the factors connected with prosperous transition of students through university study is an advantage.
Outstanding organisation and communication skills and the capability to work as part of a team are imperative. Data management (tracking and monitoring) and research and programme development are integral components of the function (development in this area will be fully supported).
practice working with Maori and knowledge of tikanga (or a availability to lgain rapidly) are essential. Ideally you will be familiar with the university environment or tertiary sector and eager to lgain more.

Key tasks include:
   » Supporting the team of the MHWDU to meet overarching strategic and operational health workforce development goals.
   » Developing skills to facilitate the prosperous delivery of Te Whakapuawai Maori HSFY student support programme.
   » Facilitating learning and a sense of whanau for Maori HSFY students, in particular academic skills, the peer educator component and students professional and cultural development.
   » Supporting the management of results data for Te Whakapuawai, both qualitative and quantitative.
   » Effectively managing communications with Maori HSFY students and organizing key events to a high standard.
Your skills and practice/Ka pukeka me ka wheako
   » A appropriate degree/post-graduate qualification or equivalent proven skills working on large projects.
   » A background in Maori development, practice in the education or health sectors would be an advantage.
   » A strong commitment to Maori development and practice working with Maori.
   » Proven practice working effectively within a team and strong interpersonal skills.
   » Proficiency, or a commitment to developing proficiency, in te reo Maori me ona tikanga is important.
   » Excellent written and verbal communication skills including public speaking (to students).
   » Demonstrated capability to plan and coordinate events to a high standard.
   » practice gathering and working with data, both qualitative and quantitative (although support will be provided).
   » Excellent problem solving abilities.
Further details/Puroko
This is a full time, fixed-term position (to 30 June 2023).
Flexibility to work after hours and weekends during peak periods is required.
