At the heart of Early Learning and Student Achievement Group is making sure that every day, in every early learning service, kohanga reo, school, and kura, the education workforce and curriculum delivery is world class, and focused on what New Zealanders need for their best future.
Secondary Tertiary is in the Early Learning and Student Achievement (ELSA) Group. Information technology is responsible for setting the standards of NCEA qualifications that senior secondary level students study.
About this function
This recruitment is for multiple Technical Writer functions.
All Technical Writer functions are expected to embrace the challenge of ensuring the inclusion of matauranga Maori and te ao Maori in all the work the team produces.
Two candidates are being recruited specifically to work on subject development in te reo Maori. Who will work closely with our Akonga Maori team.
You will work within the Production House team. Which is a key delivery agent for the Review of Achievement Standards (RAS) project. The RAS project is a key mechanism for achieving the objectives in the NCEA Change Programme. Through RAS, NCEA Level 1, 2 and 3 standards will be developed. With consistency to the policy goal, having more foundational learning at NCEA Level 1. With more specialisation at Levels 2-3.
There are currently over 1,000 achievement standards across NCEA.
The Production House team works alongside other teams, to develop products for the RAS project, alongside leaders from the education sector.
You will work alongside teachers and other stakeholders from the education sector to produce new standards and connected products for NCEA. You will be responsible for providing technical (written) skills. So, high-quality written products are produced and undertake analysis. You will work closely with a lead from the Senior Secondary team who will facilitate the stakeholder group/s you support.
Technical Writers report to the managers of the Production House team and Senior Manager of NCEA Product Delivery.
Production House is a moderate-sized team of about 14+ technical writers. With this recruitment the total team is expected to grow to over 20 technical writers. Information technology is currently located in Matauranga House at 33 Bowen Street, Wellington.
About you

To be prosperous in the function, you will need to be comfortable with becoming the technical expert in a group setting and key driver of product development behind the scenes in the Ministry. Plus, at times with NZQA (our partner in the project). You will work with other parts of our business to get products completed, to-time and to high quality.
Some of your production skills can be developed on the job. Training will be provided. However, candidates should have strong written skills and attention to detail.
This would be a good entry position into a high-profile government department with a great reputation. Prior practice in the education sector and/or in another government department would be desirable but not essential. Existing technical writers should apply. Plus, other people with skillsets like policy analysis should also consider this function.
People who can think conceptually and produce documents to suit client and technical needs would do well in this function. You should be confident at discussing matters, undertaking research, performing analysis and presenting your contributions to small groups – both internally in the Ministry and externally as part of the RAS project. You need to demonstrate your resilience to be prosperous.
