Director of Academic Quality

   »Lead and manage AUT’s academic quality assurance
   »Partner, influence, maintain rigour and drive continual quality improvement
   »Permanent full-time function located at AUT’s City Campus

Our Academic Quality Office is responsible for developing and maintaining the University’s academic policies, procedures and guidelines and coordinating the processes for the approval and review of the University’s academic programmes. Information technology also contacts with the Committee on University Academic Programmes (CUAP) of Universities New Zealand on behalf of AUT, prepares for and coordinates the University’s participation in academic audits and ensures our programmes comply with the New Zealand Qualifications Framework.

The function
As the head of the Academic Quality Office (AQO), the Director of Academic Quality is a highly visible and instrumental leader for AUT on issues relating to the university meeting its internal and external academic requirements, and evidence of academic standards and quality of education. This is an enabling function – pivotal in bringing efficiencies and people together. We’re looking to do things more efficiently, integrate better and partner with senior academics across the university. There is significant scope for continual quality improvement. We don’t want the AQO to be the only place skills in this area sits, and an important part of the endeavour will be partnering with senior academics across AUT to build academic quality capcapability and leverage existing faculty skills.
Key focus areas of this function include:
   » Lead and manage the University’s quality assurance arrangements
   » Provide specialist advice for design and development of new programmes and quality assurance capcapability in the faculties
   » Provide detailed analysis and strategic advice on issues pertaining to academic quality assurance and high-quality teaching and learning provision
   » Lead and provide oversight of academic reviews and audits, supporting the design, development and implementation of quality management systems
   » Advise university colleagues in relation to quality assurance and enhancement matters
this function reports to our Pro-Vice Chancellor Learning and Teaching and will also work very closely with our Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic and the Director of Strategy and Planning. You will lead a team of 3 committed and hard-working direct reports, who have significant practice in the quality in education and broad institutional wisdom.
What kind of person are we looking for?
The ideal person will deliver on processes, maintain rigour and always be looking to inform and streamline. You’ll be fully across policies and processes and will require an exceptionally high level of attention to detail but will also be creative and able to look at different and better ways of doing things. You’ll be pragmatic, resilient and solution orientated and work to very high levels of accountcapability. You’ll be able to forge long-term positive continuing relationships and understand the importance of business partnering to better facilitate the university’s capcapability growth in shared skills.

   » broad practice managing quality systems and quality assurance frameworks, procedures and regulations in higher education and leading an academic quality department.
   » Knowledge of higher education and consciousness of current issues in the higher education sector, both nationally and internationally.
   » practice of external review, inspection or audit processes.
   » practice working effectively with Senior leadership abilities Teams within the academic sector.
   » Skilled in influencing and building trusting relationships with senior academic leaders.
   » capability to develop comprehensive knowledge and knowledge of significant quality assurance regulatory frameworks and requirements, and translate them into practice, providing authoritative and effective advice and guidance to staff.
   » A postgraduate degree in a significant field is required. A doctorate is desirable but not essential.
   » candidates are welcome to add further comments of their own, which they feel of relevance to the function and its requirements.
