About our group and team
Learning Support is a critical part of the Sector Enablement and Support group in the Ministry. We are charged with leading the education sector in ensuring that children and young people with additional learning needs are supported to achieve their full potential through education.
Our Learning Support specialists work closely with families, wh?nau, caregivers, schools and early childhood educators in English and M?ori medium settings and other agencies to help maximise learning results and promote social inclusion.
About this function
As an Advisor on Deaf Children you will play a critical function in our region’s Learning Support team by;
   » providing specialist support to babies and children who are deaf or hard of hearing
   » providing professional support and guidance to schools, teachers and families and building the capacity of those who are best placed to support the learning of these babies and children
   » providing appropriate specialist intervention plans
   » working as part of a trans-disciplinary team where a child’s needs are complex.
Aboutyou
To be prosperous you will need;
   » a masters in special education (Sensory Disabilities/Hearing Impairment) or a diploma of Adviser on Deaf and Hearing-Impaired Children. Please note, if you do not have either of these qualifications but you have a teacher of the deaf or speech language therapist or equivalent qualification with at least two years’ practice in that function we can consider you but you will be required to complete the masters in special education (Sensory Disabilities/Hearing Impairment) within four years after appointment
   » expertise and practice in language, communication and child development and in the educational and audiological management for children who are deaf or hard of hearing
   » practice and expertise of New Zealand Sign Language
   » excellent communication and interpersonal expertise and an capability to work effectively with children, young people and their families and teachers across a diverse range of settings
   » the capability to understand and apply the principles of Te Tirirti o Waitangi and tangatawhenuatanga.
