M?ORI HEALTH WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT UNIT (MHWDU)
About our team – M? te t?ma
The University of Otago’s M?ori Health Workforce Development Unit (MHWDU) are passionate about increasing the number of M?ori in New Zealand’s health workforce.
Our team deliver a range of recruitment, retention and achievement programmes that support current and future M?ori students into and through health sciences study. The MHWDU sits within the Division of Health Sciences K?hatu Centre for Hauora M?ori and all activity is underpinned by M?ori values and frameworks.
The function – Te mahi
This is a flexible function suited to a recent graduate, post-graduate student or Somebody with practice working with young adults.
As a Kai?rahi/M?ori Student Coordinator you will be working on a range of programmes with a particular focus on:
   » MHWDU outreach and recruitment initiatives (Te Ara Hauora programmes) with M?ori secondary school students. Supporting the delivery of programmes that provide hands-on exposure to sciences and m?tauranga M?ori, and providing information about health sciences study to M?ori students, wh?nau, schools and communities.
   » Supporting M?ori student transition into university working alongside the T? Kahika Scholarship and other M?ori students progressing through the (pre-undergraduate foundation year) Pathway health sciences course.
this function will also support the delivery of other MHWDU programmes and team activities where required. This position includes coordinating various events, academic tutorials and fostering a sense of wh?nau with current and previous T? Kahika recipients, significant staff and community groups.

We are pursuing candidates who are self-directed, highly motivated, mature, well-organised, and passionate about M?ori education/M?ori health development.

   » Excellent interpersonal and communication expertise.
   » A strong grasp of Microsoft Office software, e.g., Word and Excel.
   » A full NZ driver’s licence.
   » A strong commitment to working in a kaupapa M?ori team.
   » The capability to work unsupervised.
   » Some flexibility for after-hours work (agreed in advance).
   » Proficiency in te reo M?ori me ?n? tikanga is desired but not essential.

This is a fixed-term position (1 year), from January – December 2023.
The function is part-time (minimum 0.5 FTE to full-time) negotiable.
Days and hours of work will be negotiated, with some after hours and weekend work required from time to time.
