The Board of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra is calling for applications for the position of Chief Executive. This exciting function will build on the exceptional work of the current Chief Executive who has led the organisation on a decade-long transformational journey.
Now recognised nationally, and celebrated locally, for the depth of its work, the CSO believes that music can enrich lives in different ways and aims to share these practices with as many people as possible through providing a wide variety of ways in which our audiences can discover, encounter, and enjoy great musical practices.
The orchestra contributes to the cultural diversity of the city in many ways - not only through a full and varied concert season, as the orchestra of choice for many touring artists and other arts organisations, including the Royal New Zealand Ballet, but equally importantly through its multi-dimensional Community Engagement programme.
The far-reaching Community Engagement programme includes school residencies, multi-week programmes for people living with dementia, the Platform programme to build expertise, confidence and self-esteem for those about to leave prison, collaborations with other organisations such as Jolt Dance, library and retirement village performances, and at civic events.
The CSO currently employs twelve people, located in Christchurch, with six direct reports to the Chief Executive (Chief Operating agent, Head of Marketing and Development, Head of Community Engagement, Finance Manager, Chief Conductor and Concertmaster).
The Chief Executive is accountable to the Board and has overall responsibility for the artistic direction of the orchestra (including the annual concert season), integrity of financial and performance-located reporting to the Board; for guiding and implementing agreed strategic plans; and for CSO's financial sustaincapability.
Specifically, candidates will be enthusiastic champions for "orchestral music" in New Zealand; for building on the achievements represented by the CSO brand; and for providing diverse and growing opportunities for our communities to explore "music for everyone".
candidates for this position are invited to demonstrate significant capcapability and practice in artistic planning and programming, strategy development, management (including financial oversight) and organisational and team leadership abilities.
Candidates will require effective communication expertise and be expected to play an active function in building and maintaining relationships with CSO's external funding partners/sponsors/donors, including Creative New Zealand.
