Job description

Plastic Surgeon

Dunedin Hospital

Fixed-term (1.0 FTE) - Parental Leave cover

Southern District Health Board

About Southern District Health Board

Welcome to Southern DHB! Our DHB covers the largest geographical catchment amongst all the DHB's in New Zealand. We proudly strive to provide top quality healthcare to our diverse patient population. We are now looking for a dynamic, forward thinking Plastic Surgeon for a parental leave cover.

About the function

This is a full-time 1.0 FTE function located in Dunedin. The parental leave will start in Dec 2021 and end in June 2022.

As an introduction, we provide care for a population of approximately 350,000 spread over the lower South Island of New Zealand. Our staff enjoy close relationships with the University of Otago, School of Medicine and Otago Polytechnic School of Nursing. We benefit from continuous professional development, involvement with medical and nursing student training, participation in research and many more opportunities arising from working in a combined clinical-academic environment.

Currently we are a team of four and you would work in a close and supportive environment. Our department provides generalist plastic surgery service; therefore good exposure to a great variety of plastic surgery including skin cancer treatment, breast reconstruction, elective hand surgery (acute hands are managed primarily by Orthopaedics) and the opportunity to provide reconstructive collaboration with the Orthopaedic, ENT and General Surgical Services. Some practice in management of burns and practice in microsurgery is essential. We are well supported by the other Plastic Surgery centres in NZ with regard to large burns, cleft lip and palate, craniofacial surgery and vascularanomaly surgery.

We work very closely together and we value a welcoming, safe, equitable and inclusive work environment. Therefore, Information technology is key for you to have a sound knowledge of and commitment to multi-cultural living and family / whanau principles. These core values align with our work and life practices and team well-being.

About Dunedin

Dunedin is a great little city with a big town feel and well-known for its Southern Hospitality. Outside of work, you will find life in Dunedin to be very easy with its great schools, laid back lifestyle and world-famous wildlife on the Otago Peninsula. This compact yet vibrant regional city has plenty of energy, which is to be expected with Information technology being a University town. This sustains great activities such as theatre, stunning gardens, art galleries, live-music and a diverse selection of restaurants and cafés. Central Otago is a notable holiday destination and many outdoor recreation opportunities are easily accessible from Dunedin.

About you

this function is open to registered Medical Practitioners who have Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) or equivalent, enabling specialist (vocational) registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
