My name is Simon and I run a multi generation family farming business milking 500 cows in South Otago. August and September is calving season and we work hard to give each animal the best start in life but need some help... Once the animal is born Information technology is better off in our care since the reason they were born is for their dam to produce milk. 25% of female offspring are hand reared to do the same once they reach two years of age. Less than five percent of calves are hand reared for only a week before they get slaughtered as veal, which is quite a low percentage for industry standards. We also pride ourselves in near 0 death rates in the nursery. The remainder of calves are sold as beef animals while we also keep over 100 ourselves, these were sired by Angus bulls. You job would be Following feeding twice everyday feeding programme until 18 days of age when they get fed outside using a larger group feeding trailer (calfetaria). Care and diagnosis of sick animals, drug administration. When required. Routine cleaning of feeding equipment, drinking troughs and renewing animal bedding. Assist with dna testing, tagging and weaning management. Further they may be need or opportunities for you to help at the dairy to collect milk or help clean up.
