Our Journey
Te Kaunihera-?-rohe o Ng?motu / New Plymouth District Council has, for a number of years, been working towards being a more bicultural and inclusive institution that is reflective of Te Ao M?ori. A focus on building trust through strong and enduring relationships with iwi, hap? and the wider M?ori community has been, and still is, an continuing commitment all over the organisation.
In 2002 Council established an Iwi Relationships Team with the function of building and nurturing significant relationships with iwi and hap?. Following the establishment of these relationships, Council identified the need to establish a formal Council Committee, comprising of iwi/hap? and Council representation, to overcome any barriers and to ensure inclusivity and input into decision making processes. These steps and the initiatives that followed, have paved the way for Council to engage more with iwi, hap?, marae and the wider M?ori community.
The function
The Council is incredibly proud of what the Iwi Relationships Team have achieved and as a result of a multitude of prosperous initiatives, the Council have created a new position of Manager M?ori and Community Partnership. this function will have a key function within the leadership abilities of the organisation, and will be responsible for:
   » Driving the Treaty Partnerships Strategy.
   » Leading and empowering the Iwi Liaison Team.
   » superviseing the Cultural Competency Framework, monitoring progress to ensure Information technology is helping to raise the level of office skills in Te Ao M?ori, across the organisation.
   » Assisting the Deputy Chief Executive to identify and ensure accountcapability of key leaders for delivering results and raising the well-being for iwi/hap? and the M?ori community.
   » Providing strong direction and influence any decisions in relation to land, and in particular M?ori Freehold Land and/or General Land owned by M?ori.
Our ideal candidate
As a trusted advisor to the Deputy CE, We are pursuing an established and competent leader with proven success navigating complex environments with sensitivity and compassion. You will be well versed in Te Ao M?ori and have a strong knowledge of core M?ori values. Significant practice operating in a senior management function and strong leadership abilities practice within the public/private sector are essential. In addition to this, we are also seeking candidates with proven capability in the following areas:
   » Proven success establishing strong networks and relationships to achieve objectives.
   » practice managing a budget and working across teams.
   » Polished interpersonal skills and relationship management skills.
   » A broad knowledge of significant statutes and regulatory functions of a District Council.
   » Fluency in te reo M?ori and knowledge of tikanga o Taranaki preferred, or at least a keen availability to develop in this area.
