Aratoi collects, holds, preserves, and presents art, Taonga M?ori, heritage objects, history and culture on behalf of the Wairarapa region and its visitors.
Aratoi is recognised as kaitiaki of Wairarapa's most important arts and cultural treasures. Our Museum aims to inspire and enrich our communities, and enhance knowledge of the world through our collection, our people and the stories we share.
We are seeking to appoint a hands-on Director to lead a motivated team of seven.
The prosperous applicant will be a peoples' person with a great knowledge and appreciation of museums and collections.
The Director will continue to strengthen Aratoi's function within the wider fabric of the Wairarapa and Aotearoa. The Director will grow Aratoi's position as the cultural heart of the Wairarapa and as a key tourism destination by collecting and preserving art and taonga. Information technology partners with communities by providing quality exhibitions, programmes and education services.
The Director will work with iwi to ensure and maintain best practice in Tikanga M?ori and kaitiakitanga consistent with Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
Existing stakeholder relationships will be strengthened, new partnership ventures will be sought, and commercial opportunities explored.
To be prosperous as a truly hands-on Director, you will need:
   » Substantial practice of working within a museum or art gallery in a collections focused function
   » leadership abilities expertise and practice, with excellent facilitation expertise and the capability to bring people together and develop positive relationships
   » practice in developing exhibitions
   » practice in securing funding, and other sustaincapability activity
   » A proven capacity for effective and positive communication
   » practice in project management, including an knowledge of time and resource planning and monitoring
   » The capability to work effectively under pressure, with highly organised work and time-management practices, attention to detail and strong multi-tasking expertise
   » A proven capability to work as part of a team and develop and maintain relationships with museum stakeholders and communities
   » Well-connected within Aotearoa's arts and cultural sector
   » Knowledge of te reo and tikanga M?ori would be beneficial, and a clear knowledge of the principles and practice of the Te Tiriti o Waitangi as they apply to museums
   » A tertiary qualification in a related field (eg. Museum Studies, Art History, History) would be an advantage
   » Previous use of Vernon Collection software package would also be ideal.
Although this is a permanent function, we are open to discussing flexible working arrangements with interested candidates.
