About us
Taranaki Mounga is a 34,000ha restoration project of the mountains, ranges and islands of Taranaki. The project is being delivered by a partnership including the Taranaki Iwi Chairs Forum, NEXT Foundation, Toi Foundation and the Department of Conservation. Our success relies heavily on partnerships across the Taranaki region.
Working with entities like Te K?hui o Taranaki, Te Korowai o Ng?ruahine, Taranaki Regional Council, Taranaki Kiwi Trust, Kaitake Ranges Conservation Trust, Te Ara Taiao and many individuals and businesses across the Taranaki Region, we are working to return our mountain back to life – he kawa ora.
Moving forward, Treaty Settlement of the mountains that make up the national park is going to set the trajectory for the restoration of the mountain out into the future.

The opportunity
Guided by our vision of He Kawa Ora - Sustaining the Health and well-being of Te K?hui Tupua and their people, We are pursuing an Operations Manager to lead our people through the next phase of the project and beyond.
This is a hugely compensateing function that offers an amazing opportunity for a true people leader to be part of something bigger than themselves. The restoration mahi is heart-led, and we are therefore looking for a leader who has proven success developing, coaching, teaching, and leading diverse teams to succeed.
The function
The Operations Manager is responsible for ensuring our young team are organised, have clear direction, and are supported to be their best. Reporting to the Co-Project Directors, you will lead the Taranaki Mounga team and support our team of volunteers to ensure we deliver on the key accountabilities of the programme.
this function requires a hands-on and agile leader who can comfortably flex between the administrative functions of the function and getting out on the Mounga working alongside the team.
In addition, the Operations Manager will be responsible for:
   » building effective working relationships with iwi, the Taranaki community, local councils, the Department of Conservation, the region's private sector and philanthropists;
   » prioritising project workflows and timelines;
   » maintaining clear and regular lines of communication with the project directors and stakeholders;
   » training, coaching and mentoring the team to ensure they have the tools and knowledge to succeed;
   » recruiting, onboarding and ensuring the people practices are in place;
   » Providing advice to ensure the knowledge and incorporation of Te Ao M?ori and m?tauranga into day-to-day work;
   » superviseing the day-to-day financials of the business.
Our ideal person
Due to the unique nature of this function, we are open to considering applications from ?heart-led' leaders who are inspired by te reo M?ori, tikanga, and contributing to the restoration of our Mounga and leading our people to achieve prosperous results.
With a natural capability to organise people and projects, you will have proven practice leading diverse teams and prosperously navigating multiple stakeholders. With an optimistic outlook on life, you will be a confident and level-headed leader and communicator, who adopts a practical approach to finding solutions and getting things done.
You may be an educator, project manager, practiced leader or coach who has proven success driving operational excellence through your capability to motivate, engage, and empower those under your leadership abilities.
Conservation and environmental practice would be advantageous, as would a significant tertiary qualification, however significant practice and proven leadership abilities success are valued more in this function.
What we've achieved so far:
We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved in the six years of our operation. Our successes to date include:
   » the delivery of an apprenticeship programme.
   » the extension of the stoat and ferret trap network to 22,000ha, with 70% of that being maintained regularly by the community.
   » alongside Taranaki Regional Council working to completely remove possums from 4,000ha between the Timaru and ??kuramatapu Rivers, including Kaitake, farmland and the township of ??kura.
   » the complete removal of goats from across the national park.
   » the return of toutouwai after a 112-year absence from the national park.
   » an increase in whio pairs from 37 to 63.
   » alongside Taranaki Kiwi Kohanga at Rotokare enabled the release of 46 kiwi across Kaitake and Pouakai over the last two years, a step change for kiwi in our region.
   » direct investment and trialling in the latest traps and techniques for predator control coming to market.
