We’re looking for talented Senior Advisors to join a dynamic, tight-knit team navigating some of New Zealand’s most pressing strategic crisis management challenges at the heart of our national security system. If you’re not looking for permanent change, secondment opportunities will also be considered.
The National Security Systems Directorate (NSSD) sits within the National Security Group, Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.
Our function is to support the system across a broad range of all-hazards, all-risk national security areas. We support inter-agency planning and coordination; provide secretariat support to the system’s governance boards; contribute to system responses to issues of national security significance; and promote collaboration across the broad range of agencies working across national security in New Zealand.
The Senior Advisor’s key responsibilities are:
   » contributing to complex projects and programmes, including the development of an enhanced strategic approach to national security and responding to the recommendations of the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the terrorist attack on Christchurch masjidain.
   » building relationships across the national security community.
   » leading, coordinating and supporting interagency and external collaboration to support national security objectives underpinned by a risk-located framework.
   » supporting senior decision-makers by providing quality advice about cross-cutting system-level issues.
   » contributing flexibly to the broader work of the Directorate, particularly in response to crises as part of a duty team.
What are we looking for?
We’re looking for practiced, competent senior advisors who can pivot quickly and turn their hand to whatever comes along. Significant practice in working in a strategic advisory, policy or operational function in the New Zealand public sector, and a demonstrated knowledge of New Zealand’s security environment are essential. The prosperous candidates will be able to show an knowledge of, and commitment to, the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi).

Eligibility Requirements:
To be eligible for this position, you must have been a NZ citizen for at least 10 years. Alternatively you must hold NZ Permanent Residence or hold a current NZ Residency Class Visa and have been a citizen of UK, USA, Canada or Australia for at least 10 years.
You must also be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret Special (TSS) security clearance. Ordinarily to obtain this level of clearance candidates must have a 15-year checkable background in countries where significant and reliable checks can be undertaken. Where requisite checks are unable to be made, the candidate application may not be able to be progressed.
