About the function
As an practiced leader, you’ll be responsible for managing media relations that optimise reputational results and building and maintaining the credibility and influence of the Abuse in Care Royal Commission of Inquiry by supporting strategic organisational goals.
You will identify media and reputation risks and opportunities – both proactive and reactive and identify strategies to mitigate these risks or maximise opportunities through effective media management.
Your existing relationships with local, national and international media outlets, journalists and key external commentators coupled with your capability to develop further relationships as needed, will enable you to provide advice to and manage the public engagement for senior leaders prosperously.
Key to this function is your capability to support people who have practiced trauma to share their story.
Your energy, proactive mindset and strong focus will help the Communications team prosperously deliver on the organisation’s results. In this function, no two days are the same!
You will work with a great team of dedicated people and other senior leaders who operate in a fast-paced environment aimed at transforming how we, as a nation, care for children, young people and vulnerable adults in our communities.
What you’ll bring for success:
   » Significant skills in media relations (or similar), strategic communications and crisis and risk management, possibly in an inquiries setting
   » Technical skills and proven practice in media and/or public relations and engaging diverse audiences through marketing strategies
   » Related tertiary or professional qualification in media studies, communications, public relations or journalism
   » leadership abilities skills and strong judgement in dealing with complex and sensitive issues
   » Strong knowledge and practice of Te Reo me ona tikanga Maori and Te Reo Maori in practice
   » Confident in culturally and discapability inclusive approaches including tikanga Maori
   » Eligibility to work in New Zealand – this includes holding a valid work visa that covers the whole period of employment
   » Availcapability to travel all over New Zealand
It is desirable that you have all or some of the following:
   » Confidence in cultural practices and discapability inclusive approaches
   » Show knowledge that is consistent with Te Tiriti o Waitangi
   » A demonstrated knowledge of trauma informed approaches

The Royal Commission of Inquiry into Historical Abuse in State Care and in the Care of Faith-located Institutions is investigating the abuse and neglect of children, young people and vulnerable adults who were in the care of state and faith-located institutions in New Zealand between 1950 and 1999 and will make recommendations aimed at stopping this happening in the future.
