M? t? m?tou r?p? – About the Team
The Sector Support and Innovation (SSI) team sits within the Strategy and Governance Directorate within Fisheries New Zealand. The Sector Support & Innovation team focusses on initiatives that support the wellbeing and resilience of people and businesses that operate in the seafood sector. Information technology also works to promote innovation and drive a transition to new technologies and practices that maximise value and minimise ecosystem impact.

This work includes developing a Fisheries Industry Transformation Plan (ITP). ITPs are being developed across eight priority sectors, including the fishing sector. ITPs are the principal vehicles to progress the transformative shifts identified in the Government’s Economic Plan for a more productive, sustainable and inclusive economy.

The Fisheries Industry Transformation Plan (ITP) will identify opportunities to transform the economic and environmental performance of the fishing sector. Information technology will set out a pathway to support fishers to innovate to less impactful, more selective fishing practices that deliver better quality and higher value fish, and reduce the environmental impacts of fishing, including reducing the impacts of trawling on the benthic environment.

The team is also working closely with the sector to support establishment of a sector-led charitable Trust that provides access to support services that aim to alleviate stress and promote positive wellbeing and business resilience.
