Pasifika men in prison make up 12% of the incarcerated population, but only 8.4% of the total population in Aotearoa (Statistics New Zealand, 2018). This disproportionate representation illustrates the importance of our mahi that meets the specific needs of Pasifika offenders.

The Regional Adviser Pacific provides sound support, guidance and advice at regional level to enhance the quality of services forPasifika men & women in our care, and to build relationships with Pasifika communities in order to empower them in coveringPasifika offenders’ rehabilitation and reintegration needs.
This is a compensateing function which supports our region working alongside the senior leadership abilities team providing support for our people by reviewing offender services for their effectiveness, and developing and sustaining relationships with service providers and other agencies/groups that contribute to the achievement of positive results for Pasifika peoples.
The scope is diverse and will see you building strong relationships to encourage the participation of Pasifika churches, families (aiga/kainga) and communities in covering the needs ofPasifika men & women in our care. By building these networks and relationships this will enhance working relationships between Pasifika communities and the local/regional rehabilitation and reintegration services we provide.

This is a very important function for our region and as such, your kete (kato/ato) will be full with a mixture of expertise, practices and knowledge to offer which will include:
   » Demonstrated knowledge of, and leadership abilities in,Pasifika issues
   » A good knowledge of cultural protocols and processes withinPasifika communities, and of Pasifika community structures and dynamics.
   » practice in working with, or within, government agencies
   » Good standing within the Pasifika community and well-developed networks
   » An knowledge of the diversities and complexities facingPasifika peoples, and the needs ofPasifika communities in relation to the work of the Department.
   » An knowledge of the Department’s values, strategic goals and strategic direction in relation to Pasifika peoples
   » A high degree of integrity and the capability to self-manage and maintain personal and professional standards
   » Good command of English and one or morePasifika language(s)
   » Proven communication and presentation expertise
   » Proven research, analytical, and report-writing expertise
