About our group and team
The Early Learning and Student Achievement (ELSA) group is a key part of the Ministry with over 300 staff. The group works to make learning and teaching significant, real and valued. At the heart of our work is making sure that every day, in every early learning service, k?hanga reo, school, and kura, the education workforce and curriculum delivery is world class, and focused on what New Zealanders need for their best future.
The Pay Equity team is responsible for investigating and settling education sector pay equity claims. This is done in conformity with the State Sector Pay Equity Claims Framework and the requirements of the Equal Pay Amendment Act 2020.
About this function
The Ministry of Education is seeking a Principal Adviser to join the Education Workforce pay equity team and help lead our response to, and investigation of, pay equity claims across the education sector. This is an exciting opportunity for a strategic thinker and practiced policy professional who likes a challenge and wants to make a tangible contribution to equitable results for our education workforce.
You will join a dynamic and growing team that is at the forefront of implementing new pay equity legislation as we respond to pay equity claims that affect most of the schooling workforce.
Working with unions, employers and officials across the state sector, you will contribute to the day to day investigation and settlement of pay equity claims and lead the production of advice to senior Ministry leadership abilities, Ministers and central agency governance groups.
You will work closely with colleagues to ensure the correct interpretation of untested legislation and produce reporting required to satisfy internal and external governance groups.
About you
We are seeking for an practiced policy professional with high-level research, analytical, and problem-solving expertise, and a demonstrated track record of using these expertise to provide strategic advice to decision-makers.
The person we’re looking for will have a strong track record of building and sustaining positive relationships with a broad range of stakeholders and effectively engaging, consulting and negotiating with stakeholders including senior management.
You will also offer:
   » excellent written communication expertise
   » demonstrated capability to compile high-quality briefings and reports
   » Previous practice producing advice to Ministers and to Cabinet
   » Previous practice in leading prosperous Budget bid processes
   » practice interpreting complex legislation is also ideal.
   » A great work ethic and high level of professionalism
   » excellent communication expertise and the capability to work collaboratively with others to deliver results
   » the capability to understand and apply the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and tangata whenuatanga
