About this function
As a Special Education Advisor/Kaitakawaenga/Learning Support Advisor you will play a critical function in our region’s Learning Support team by:
   » supporting parents and wh?nau, teachers and schools to meet the learning support needs of children and young people
   » developing and maintaining collaborative relationships with a range of professional partners, community and sector groups and support agencies to ensure that services are coordinated and effective
   » enhancing inclusive practices in early learning services, kohanga reo, kura, schools, and other educational settings
   » assessing, collaboratively planning, supporting, and monitoring the implementation of individual (or group) intervention plans
   » working proactively with M?ori tamariki, mokopuna and their wh?nau, hap? and iwi, educators and Learning Support colleagues to identify and eliminate barriers to access to learning support services for M?ori students with learning support needs
   » working with and alongside adults to develop appropriate communications, consultation and co-operation to promote a well-learning lifestyle for tamariki and rangatahi M?ori requiring additional quality supports across all education settings
   » covering key results for wh?nau in key plan meetings with educators, Ministry specialist staff and agencies
   » integrating Te Ao M?ori with subject matter experts to endorse and strengthen cultural solutions for the learner and wh?nau
   » working effectively as part of a team.
About you
To be prosperous you will need the following:
   » significant Diploma qualification, Bachelor of Education or Teaching, Post-graduate Diploma in Early Intervention/Special Education/Educational Psychology
   » practice working with children and young people with learning and behavioural needs in a classroom or other significant setting
   » practice of supporting education and other professionals to meet the needs of children and young people with additional learning needs
   » Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and an capability to work effectively with children, young people and their families and teachers across a diverse range of settings
   » The capability to understand and apply the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and tangatawhenuatanga
   » Te Reo me ona tikanga, capability to build trusting relationships, communication and lived practice
   » Have practice teaching te reo M?ori or practice working in the community in M?ori development
   » Have a high level of competence and fluency in Te Reo M?ori me ona tikanga and be able to link this skills to work alongside colleagues and specialists in a bi-cultural way
   » capability to work effectively in M?ori settings including the auraki education system and M?ori education from kohanga reo, kura kaupapa, wharekura and whare w?nanga

About our group and team
Learning Support is a critical part of the Sector Enablement and Support Group in the Ministry. We are charged with leading the education sector in ensuring that children and young people with additional needs are supported to achieve their full potential through education. This means they gain the skills, knowledge and capability they need to be competent, confident lifelong learners.
Our Learning Support specialists work closely with families, wh?nau, caregivers, schools, kohanga reo, kura, and early childhood educators in English and M?ori medium settings and other agencies to help maximise learning results and promote social inclusion.
