About the service: The Waikato Palliative Care Program, currently accredited with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, encompasses two sites: Waikato Hospital and Hospice Waikato, providing specialist palliative care across the Waikato Region. Information technology is a reliable, supportive multi-disciplinary team, acting in a collaborative fashion across both facilities. A consult liaison service is provided by medical and nursing specialists to patients with both malignant and non-malignant diagnoses. A small number of patients are admitted under the Palliative Care service each year with complex palliative care needs or as transfers from other DHBs to access tertiary level Palliative Care input. The Palliative Care department currently reports within the Division of Oncology Hospice Waikato is the main community palliative care provider to the region, comprising a 10-bed inpatient unit. Information technology also provides an at home service, a rural outreach programme, plus outpatient clinics. Hospice patients and family/whanau benefit from access to a full range of psychosocial and spiritual support through illness and bereavement. The prosperous candidate will spend time on both sites. The Waikato Palliative Care Program has a close relationship with the University of Auckland's Waikato Clinical School and an Honorary appointment at an appropriate University level (Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor or Professor) can be arranged depending on the applicant's practice and academic qualifications. The prosperous applicant will be employed by Waikato DHB as a Senior Medical agent with generous vacation and CME leave. Stipends are provided for conference leave as well as relocation expenses.
