Due to an internal promotion, we have a great opportunity for a Principal Adviser to join our media policy team.
In the last ten years, the evolution of digital technology has been met by the innovation and ambition of media content creators. There has been a fundamental shift in the way people consume content with a transition away from traditional and linear models to digital, streaming and on demand platforms. This has profoundly altered the way that media markets operate, creating new and emerging policy challenges. These policy challenges are being faced by jurisdictions across the globe and We are seeking for a talented, strategic thinker that can deliver big picture policy solutions situated within New Zealand’s regulatory context. As stewards and guides of our culture and heritage, Manat? Taonga has a critical function in ensuring that Aotearoa has a vibrant, trusted and diverse media system that fulfils the information and cultural aspirations of all New Zealanders.
Te P?p?hoMedia Policy
We are a diverse and supportive policy team, which is responsible for legislative and regulatory settings to support the radio, print, television, and digital media sectors in New Zealand. The Government has an continuing investment in public media results and Crown entities such as Radio New Zealand, Television New Zealand, New Zealand on Air, the Broadcasting Standards Authority, and community access radio.
The vicapability of the New Zealand media sector is an important foundation of a functioning civil society, and Information technology is critical to maintain a free and independent News media sector. Local stories and content play a key function in helping to shape and support our cultural identity, giving effect to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi by providing a focus on M?ori broadcasters, journalists and content creators, M?ori culture, m?tauranga M?ori, and the protection of te reo M?ori as a taonga.
The Ministry is also supporting a review of the way content is regulated, including assessing options for machinery of government changes, undertaking work to assess the impact of digital platforms on the sustaincapability of the media sector and supporting greater ethnic media diversity in Aotearoa. The work programme includes delivering complex advice to Ministers, Cabinet papers, Regulatory Impact Statements, developing budget bids, and supporting legislation through the House.

Reporting to the Manager Policy, you will lead projects and provide high quality advice on key media and broadcasting sector reforms. The function is highly collaborative, and you will need the confidence and proven capability to drive complex work forward while developing and managing relationships at all levels across government and the wider cultural and media sectors. You will enjoy coaching and mentoring staff, to support colleagues to develop their core policy craft.
You will deliver smart solutions to complex problems, including strengthening New Zealand’s broader media ecosystem. We are seeking for a politically savvy, enthusiastic team player to join an inclusive Ministry, with a clear focus on supporting a diverse and vibrant cultural sector.

   » Strategic leadership abilities in shaping and delivering policy advice in the public sector
   » Analytical capcapability and strong written communication expertise with a demonstrated capability to deliver core policy products

   » capability to collaborate with government partners, senior leadership abilities and ministers
   » Cultural competency in Te Ao M?ori and tikanga M?ori, or a availability to engage and learn
