Creative Bay of Plenty and ?mokoroa Public Art Group (OPAG), in conjunction with the local Hap?, Pirir?kau Incorporated Society, are commissioning a carved/relief panel(s) to be created from a black walnut log felled at the local Gerald Crapp Historic reserve. The panel(s) will be installed inside the temporary library on Western Ave, ?mokoroa and eventually moved to the new library once this has been constructed.
Vision
It is envisaged that there will be up to three wall panels; this commission therefore may be awarded to more than one artist. We will encourage shortlisted artists to collaborate with Pirir?kau carvers to create a multi-cultural representation for ?mokoroa. The design will provide an opportunity to express ?mokoroa's unique identity and the library staff brief is very broad in that the panel(s) should be ?something significant to ?mokoroa in some way?.
Dimensions and material
The space on the library wall for the panel(s) measures 4.8m x 1.6m, but this does not need to be filled completely, and the weight of the finished panel(s) will need to be appropriate for hanging on this wall. The black walnut log has been milled into five slabs/flitches (measuring roughly 2.7m long and 500mm, 480mm, 400mm, 350mm and 300mm wide) and 2 offcuts.
Process and timeframes
Expressions of Interest close 5pm, Thursday 31 March 2022.
