Education plays a critical function in promoting and supporting the wellbeing of children and young people.
The Ministry promotes a holistic approach to wellbeing for tamariki and their wh?nau. As part of this approach, we are implementing an alternative model of counselling in selected schools, with skills provided from outside the education sector.

Community Provision of Counselling in Schools
At least 130 schools involving around 21,000 ?konga will receive access to counselling support from the community sector.
Counselling will be tailored to the different needs of schools and integrated with a wide variety of wellbeing supports in the school environment.
About our group and team
Service Support sits in the Learning Support team and is responsible for a range of programmes and services that support students across New Zealand to stay engaged and achieve in education. The team provides schools and community groups support and guidance to create and maintain a positive and inclusive learning environment.
About this function
The Lead Advisor – School Counselling will work closely with regional offices and national stakeholders to support the establishment of the school counselling initiative. The Lead Advisor will be the coordination point for initiatives at the national level related to counselling support.
The Lead Advisor will:
   » Develop a national implementation plan to support the establishment of the counselling initiative in eight regions.
   » Manage relationships with regional offices and national stakeholders and share information across the programme.
   » Develop guidance to ensure best practice and reporting processes are embedded in the regional programmes.
   » Provide advice on how the counselling in schools work could work collaboratively with other mental health and wellbeing supports in schools, including Mana Ake and Social Workers in Schools.
   » Build connections with significant Ministry strategies, approaches and initiatives.
About you
You will bring your practice working on other wellbeing initiatives, particularly with younger children in the school environment.
Your strength will be your capability to manage relationships across multiple stakeholders and your capability to analyse and synthesis information across a range of sources.
You will have excellent project management and communication skills, with the capability to respond to the changing needs of communities as they emerge.
As a Lead Advisor you will have a passion for supporting an inclusive education system that meets the needs of all ?konga.
To be prosperous in the function you will:
   » require a passion for working in a team that prioritises working with schools on ?konga mental health and wellbeing
   » be passionate about diversity and demonstrate your capability to work with M?ori and Pacific communities, and ?konga with learning support needs
   » have excellent relationship, communication and analytical skills
   » prioritise building great relationships and partnerships with people at all levels of the organisation
   » have significant practice in developing best practice and reporting processes
   » apply the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi to the programme.
