Ko wai m?tou – Who we are
The Ng?ti Hine Forestry Trust ( NHFT) is a large and rapidly expanding M?ori land trust. The Trust comprises of approximately 5,600 hectares that are centred alongside the rural towns of Moerewa and Kawakawa. The Trust has substantial interests in forestleases and owns horticultural orchards in Kerikeri, with wealth creation through these and other interests such as manuka honey and agriculture, has seen the Trust assets expand over time.
The Trust continues to diversify its interests for environmental, economic, cultural, and social reasons, and is also very active in the preservation and enhancement of its estate and involvement with training programmes within the Ng?ti Hine rohe.
The Trust has created a new operational position, which is being taken to market for the first time, located in Whang?rei with a satellite centre at Moerewa. This is a hands-on position, which will suit an individual who has already acquired significant sector practice ideally, with a background or practice in either; forestry, land, whenua and/or iwi environmental science matters and who is now ready to take on a long-term career position in Te Tai Tokerau. The prosperous applicant will be fully supported in the function with further training and mentoring provided.
Te ?hua o Te T?runga – The nature of the position
The newly created position of Operations Manager is a very much a hands-on function, which will call to those with practice in either; forestry, land, whenua, or with iwi environmental science practice. This is a great place in which to grow your skills whilst being supported and trained on new approaches to M?ori led indigenous whenua, land and forestry.
The intent of this function is to provide hands on management of NHFT's whenua-located businesses and projects, which at this time relate to forestry, kiwifruit, manuka (Honey) , pest control and rangahau. Augmenting these current revenue streams, will be the Trusts continuing acquisition of assets and the development of new farming, carbon and ETS related strategies. Tasked with the operational implementation of strategies, you will be adding a greater level of skills and involvement in managing the business in conjunction with the strategic vision of the organisation and will see the enablement and greater involvement by Ng?ti Hine people, leading to employment opportunities and allowing the local community to thrive.
Reporting to the CEO, you will be across key projects, reporting in on projections and milestones. Taking a hands-on approach to all you do, you will be coordinating and superviseing subcontractor obligations, ensuring contractors have individual yearly plans that align to their respective contract objectives, as working alongside contractors and staff in the office and in the field or estate.
Developing management plans, you will be providing a yearly plan and regular updates of the implementation of planning management and will be responsible for ensuring quality and timely completion of project aspects. You will regularly facilitate hui to communicate project milestones and to ensure project obligations and targets are met. Developing and maintaining collaborative relationships with internal and external key relationships, you will both model and encourage mahi tahi and team spirit. Working across and with a broad range of internal stakeholders, you will also have a large external sphere of activity with Ng?ti Hine Forestry Trust shareholders, Department of Conservation, SCION, Te Uru Rakau, PF Olsen and other contract providers, funders and agencies. A highly relationship centric position, you will draw on your own mana to positively leverage and to build high trust-located relationships.
 
At times you will be required to provide robust advice to others and you will have the capability to express your ideas clearly and conceptually, and ideally have strong knowledge of the local region, iwi, hap? and marae.
Ng? tino P?kenga/Wheako – Essential skills/practices for the function
A tertiary qualification or diploma in Project Management, Iwi Environmental Management, Forest Management, Environmental Science Business or M?ori Development is preferred, however, proven practice in one or more of these areas will also be considered.
This may mean you have recently completed University or come out of an internship and you might be looking for a function that can offer exposure to Forestry, Honey, Kiwifruit industries.

   » An consciousness and technical aptitude of a range of technologies and their practical applications in supporting projects and business requirements.
   » An knowledge and use of Te Reo M?ori and practice working within Te Ao M?ori (M?ori World view) environments.
   » Able to juggle multiple projects and requirements at one time.
   » Commercial business management exposure – this may have been gained in your own business, through working in, or interning in an organisation.
   » The social skills to effectively manage through trust, advocacy, negotiation, and collaboration.
   » practice with or aptitude to foster relationships with iwi, hap? and wh?nau.
   » practice working with government agencies and funders would be highly desirable.
   » Superior writing skills, and a track record in producing high quality written material.
   » The capability to express ideas clearly and conceptually.
   » Able to bring people together, connecting, building, and unifying via a common purpose.
   » practice managing complex sets of relationships with tact and diplomacy.
   » Able to demonstrate the proven capability to work collaboratively to develop and maintain effective relationships.
There is a preference for candidates with local knowledge of the Ng?ti Hine rohe, and who has or can develop a keen knowledge of local economic development opportunities.
A vehicle and tools of the trade are all included.
