AUT’s Research Ethics Office plays an essential function ensuring AUT delivers on its ambition to undertake high quality ethical research.AUT’s Researchis incredibly creative and exciting to work within! The University has practiced strong growth in both the volume and richness of its research activity which has resulted in an increase in the number and complexity of applications requiring ethical approval. As such, our Research Ethics Office, and this function, are fundamental to ensuring our university’s research ethics and processes are fit for purpose and appropriate.
The function
The function of Lead, AUT Research Ethics Office is an exceptional opportunity for an practiced, solution focused research ethics professional with significant practical research ethics skills. As part of a wider refreshed focus on our research, we’re working hard to deliver a cohesive and collaborative research ecosystem. You’ll become a key part of influencing this change and coordinate, facilitate, supervise and improve upon AUT’s robust and highly functioning research ethics system.
Key focus areas of this function include:
   » Leading the development and positioning of research ethics across the University, and providing specialised advice, guidance and support to the University research community (working closely with the current Ethics Advisor and, those who advise on ethics within Faculties and Schools).
   » Providing leadership abilities and management for AUT Research Ethics Office staff to ensure a highly functional team.
   » Leading the Secretariat support to AUTEC (AUT’s Ethics Committee) – the function includes being an ex officio member of AUTEC as Executive Secretary, and leads the secretariat support to AUTEC.
   » Promotion of Best Practice in Research Ethics – establishing AUT as a highly trusted place for evidence located best practice in research ethics and ethical review processes.
You will have two committed and hard-working direct reports, who provide the Ethics Office with administrative and co-ordination support and bring great passion for their work and strong ethics skills. Your team will work closely with other research/ethics groups who have the same drive and are doing their best to facilitate the system. You will report to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and work closely with the chair of AUTEC.

You will be focused on solving problems for our staff and student researchers. You will be collaborative, facilitative and resilient and have significant practical research ethics practice. You’ll have a warm and welcoming nature and a genuine customer focus, excelling at forging positive continuing relationships, and confidently delivering practical and clear outcome feedback to others. You will be service-orientated and have a very high level of attention to detail. Confidentiality, integrity and having a strong commitment to te Tiriti and are also essential.

   » Significant practical practice of research ethics involving human participants, in academia and/or a regional ethics committee.
   » expertise and practice of research in a teaching environment is preferred.
   » A demonstrated service attitude – supporting people to achieve a positive outcome even when difficult.
   » broad practice establishing and maintaining outstanding working relationships with a range of stakeholders, both internally and externally, to drive improvements.
   » Previous involvement implementing innovative changes to improve process efficiencies and effectiveness which improved service delivery. practice designing, leading and managing such projects would be ideal.
   » A postgraduate qualification (ideally a PhD) in postgraduate research and/or research ethics.
